Chapter Ten

We didn’t end up bringing Henry home with us, because Dunlap and Potts took him to the station for further questioning. He was, after all, Leonard’s relative and had been the one to find the body. The poor kid looked exhausted and wan.

Once we’d contacted all the other guests and rounded everyone back up at the inn, all heck broke loose. The group was divided three ways: There were the people who had been having a ball downtown and wanted to keep hunting for clues and interrogating witnesses and suspects. There were those who thought we should take the rest of the evening off and then regroup and resume the mystery the next day. And then there were those who were genuinely horrified that a person had been brutally murdered along the mystery route—and that they might have just as easily been the ones to discover the body.

“I don’t see why we shouldn’t go on with the weekend,” said Stacey Blake. “It’s not like we can all postpone and come back to Vermont two weeks from now. By then, Carol and I will be in Bavaria, for crying out loud!”

“But a person has died—a person who is related to that guy over there,” said Bob Fry, lifting his chin toward Henry, who was just coming through the door.

I hurried up to him and asked him if I could do anything for him, but he just shook his head and trudged upstairs.

Once Henry was safely away, Bob’s wife Glenda nodded in agreement with her husband. “And he didn’t just die. He was murdered. As far as we know, no one has been arrested at this point. And that means there’s a killer on the loose out there somewhere in the dark!”

“Could be a raving lunatic,” agreed Vernon Stokes. “A madman. Ooh—a serial killer!”

“Well, I think we can all agree on one thing: if we don’t solve a murder, we should all get a full refund,” said Carol.

At this pronouncement, there were general murmurings of agreement from the group.

“Oh great. That’s the one thing they all agree on.” I looked at Matthew, panicked.

He and I both knew the expense, the investment of both time and money, we’d already made on behalf of the inn for the weekend. And with the way business had slowed down lately and with the fall color not drawing as many leaf peepers this year, we couldn’t afford to take the kind of hit that giving full refunds to everyone would entail—not to mention the loss of business for the rest of the town.

I felt like I was being pressed between a rock and a hard place. I didn’t want to be a jerk and just go on with the weekend. Leonard had been an integral part of our mystery. And the thought of just proceeding as though nothing had happened didn’t jibe with my conscience—and that feeling was sharpened every time I thought about Henry, who had just lost his uncle.

On the other hand, we were
